“The problem is, if I don’t work this hard, someone will die who doesn’t have to.” This quote spoke to me on many levels, if a doctor isn’t committed to helping people, people will die. The work of professionals like this is very important that they concentrate on their work.
This quote also showed me how committed he is to helping not just one person, but he wants to help the world, from Russia to Haiti. He saw the lives of all people equal and he wanted to help them, he wanted to save them. This is important to have that non-prejudice mind frame when the role in your job is to help people.
This quote also shows that nothing in life comes easy, especially if you are trying to save the world, which isn’t an easy task. To get what you want in life however big the goal is, it takes work and dedication, sometimes it takes being sleep deprived and sacrificing all other things in life to accomplish a goal, but doing what you set-out to do is an award in itself. Paul Farmer got well welcomed wherever he went because of his hard work and dedication, but in exchange he didn’t do much else. His work is his life.
